Hands up if there’s a snowy drift of paperwork on every flat surface in the house. Me! Me!
Every time I tackle it, I move it into a different set of piles. One week it’s by subject. The next by date due. The next by colour coding. Really.
I swear that I can hear the papers rustle together at night. Mating. Procreating. Growing. I come out in the morning and the drift has rolled over the floor and is spreading up the sides of the couch.
It’s not really a health hazard. Like, say, food scraps. Or recyclables. Or feral cats.
Until the letters start arriving with FINAL NOTICE, DISCONNECTION, and that real heart starter – COLLECTION AGENCY.
Yep, been there.
Here’s a first step that I took. I still have paper piles, but no more heart thumping, clammy palm notices from the utility firms.
Get one of those stick on hooks that don’t leave a mark. Get a bulldog clip that can hang one end over the hook.
Stick the hook somewhere that suits you. Some people like it out in plain view. Some like it inside a cupboard door so they can get to it, but don’t have to look at it.
Now, as you go through a pile, pull out every bill.
Just the bills. Nothing else. Leave the piles where they are.
And every bill you find, clip it into the bulldog clip, so it hangs there on the hook. You can see it, you know where it is.
Don’t do anything else but this step.
If they are in envelopes, collect them all into a pile. Stand over the recycling bin with a blunt knife for a letter opener. Rip open the envelopes and dump the junk, special offers and envelopes into the bin as you go.
Don’t worry about paying those bills at the moment. The important thing is not to be all over your finances right now.
The important thing is that you know where all your bills are. And you enjoy that feeling.
Maybe there’ll be several versions of the same bill. Maybe there won’t. That’s not your problem at the moment. All you are doing is getting them into one place where you know where they are.
Done it? Fantastic.
Take a breath. Look at them all there, fluttering on the hook. How do you feel?
Bet it feels great. Give yourself a pat on the back. Well done, you.
If you try this out, let me know how it works for you. I love it. Would you like a photo of my hook and clip combo?
